“Help bridge the gap”

One of my classmates, Constantine (Connie) Michas related an anecdote to me several years ago. Connie was, like many of us, attending UBC on the skimpiest of budgets. He made an appointment with Dean Gage to let him know that he might not be able to continue through the spring term ( I think that it was 3rd year science). After a few minutes of supportive advice, Dean Gage reached into his upper desk drawer and puled out 5 —$20 bills and passed them over to “help bridge the gap”. ($100 in 1962 = ~$800 in 2016).

Connie went on to graduate in Medicine class of “66 —here is a portion of his mini bio that we included in our recent 50th reunion booklet.

Married August 23,1969 the beautiful Justine Margaret Michas Intern @ Cook County, Chicago, USA Residency in General Surgery at University of Michigan, City of Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA

1971. I started as an Assistant Professor at the University of California at Davis. It was a very new campus and Sacramento Hospital teaching residents at the hospital and medical students on the campus. During that time, because there was no near burn unit near Sacramento I developed a burn unit with the financial help of firemen as well as the Shriner’s Children Burn Hospitals. Hard work but very satisfying.
