At the beginning of every academic year, Walter Gage would host a dinner for the Engineering Undergraduate Society executive. This included all the Department presidents, EUS President & VP, Secretary, Treasurer, Slipstick Editor(s), EUS Sports Rep and the Dean of Applied Science. As the 1977-78 Engineering Physics President I attended the dinner. This particular dinner on September 28, 1977 is notable because it was the last one that Walter Gage hosted. In the fall of 1978 he was too ill to host the customary September dinner, and in October 1978 he died.
After the dinner as we stood together enjoying coffee, liqueurs, cognac and cigars; Walter spoke to us about how important it was for us as leaders in the UBC Engineering community, and as soon-to-be graduates, to consider others and do whatever we could do to help those less fortunate than ourselves. He spoke extemporaneously and with great passion and enthusiasm and we were all positively impacted by his words. I remember as we walked away from the Faculty Club after the dinner, many of us vowed to take his suggestions seriously, and find some useful way to help disadvantaged people.
