His friendly smile, his kindness, civility and his words of encouragement

I was a math student of Dean Walter Gage during 1968 to 1970 when I was studying for my M.A.Sc. in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Dean Gage was my idol. He was a gentleman and a scholar in every sense of the word.

I always looked forward to him with admiration for his friendly smile, his kindness, civility and his words of encouragement when I was overwhelmed with personal and academic challenges.

At times he had offered me financial help from his own pocket and when I repaid him back, he was very reluctant to take it back saying to me that I should use this money to help some one else who is in need of help.

He was a man of immense wit and humour and attending his math class was an experience I would cherish all my life, One can forget many things about life at UBC but one can never forget Dean Walter Gage. He was a man for the ages and you do not get another man like Dean Gage very often.
