“Little Eric?”

In the fall of 1970 I was a first year arts student. Although all these years later I can’t remember why, I found myself one day in the President’s Office. He began our conversation by asking where I had graduated from high school a few months earlier and who was my principal? Upon hearing the name “Eric Kelly”, he smiled and said, unforgettably, “Little Eric? I used to carry him around on my shoulders when he was baby!” Little Eric was, in my 17 year old eyes, ancient, but clearly not as old as the venerable Dean Gage. A pleasure to deal with and, as I said, unforgettable.
