“How are you?”

In 1946, I was a first year student at UBC. Professor Gage was teaching Math 100, in the old army huts and I was fortunate to be placed in his class. He was an outstanding teacher and drew students to him; there were about 50 of us in his class. I graduated from Medicine in 1955 but never had occasion to be in contact with Professor Gage after that math class in 1946.

In the early 1970’s, my wife and I travelled to Maui and as we waited in the arrivals lounge I spotted Dean Gage. He smiled, recognized me and said “Yurkovich, how are you?” I continue to reflect on the memory and the man and my good fortune to have known him.
