“Good! What else do you know?”

Walter Gage was a larger-than-life figure on the UBC campus with overwhelming charisma. On one occasion a student with a very deep English bass voice asked Professor Gage a question, to which the professor replied, “My what a lovely voice. Do you sing in the village choir?”

In my first year math class, I can recall students on various occasions raising a hand to ask a question. Gage would note the hand and say, “Yes, what is your question? The student would begin his response with a word such as “Uh.”  To the amusement of the class, before the student could get the question out, Gage would immediately say, “Good! What else do you know?”
