In 1971 we took a Math class in one of the large theatres from President Gage and normally his classes were very quiet. There was an Engineering stunt planned for later that day and as a result there was some subdued conversation in the classroom. Suddenly and without warning President Gage put down his chalk and wordlessly left the classroom.
Collectively we were stunned into absolute silence —-I do not recall ever being so embarrassed in my life. We sat for about three minutes which seemed like an eternity wondering if he would ever return. Then, without a single word he walked back in, picked up his chalk and resumed the lecture.
That class was always exceptionally quiet thereafter. Students recognized his unique abilities as a teacher and his handling of this incident showed his command of a classroom.
