None of this would have been possible without his helping hand

As a member of the first group of older students accepted to UBC, I was in the Elementary Basic (E. B.) group in the Faculty of Education. I had earned my way by giving piano lessons and working in a jewelry store, but as the end of the second year approached, I was running out of money. A classmate suggested I visit Dean Gage.

He welcomed me cordially and after hearing my story said, “How much money do you need?” I shamefacedly said, “I need $200.00,” to which he replied, “I think we can give you a bursary for that much, Barbara.” His generosity allowed me to finish, to become a teacher, and later a consultant and administrator. None of this would have been possible without his helping hand.

This is why I give money each year to the university and the Faculty of Education; it is a token of thanks.
