“The hungry mathematician is one who raises pi to the teeth”

Dean Gage really remembered and cared about his students!

In my math class of about 150 students in the engineering building around 1954, he would announce “and there’s David – takes two of him to cast a shadow!”. (I’m still slim some sixty years later).

Or his explanation of raising numbers to a power: “you can raise any number or any function to a power; for example 2 squared is 4, but the hungry mathematician is one who raises pi to the teeth”.

Or when we rowdy engineering students were letting off steam on the mall, his jovial technique of dispersing us only endeared him to us more. Best teacher ever!
