Walter had a car, a rarity at University in the ‘30s

In an attempt to instil some culture in the engineering students, the Vancouver Symphony by the tickets he gave to us. After the concert, we would be treated to a discussion of the program with Walter who, whenever possible, prospered enlisted the critical help of Dr. (Garnet) Sedgewick who shared Walter’s hope that the “uncouth, engineer” might be capable of absorbing some culture.

Walter had a car, a rarity at University in the ‘30s, and he used it perhaps less than 30 per cent of the time since the balance of the time it was in use by students who rarely remembered to put gas in the tank. One could hardly list the many things, both large and small, he did to assist students in the hungry 30s.
